Students study the dynamic effects of plate tectonics through the investigation of seafloor geology, sediment cores, microfossils, underwater seismology and more. The seafloor is a good place to study the history of the planet because it undergoes fewer disturbances than land. Students will investigate and examine the composition of layers in a core sample by working as a team to unlock the mysteries of Earth's climatic and tectonic past. The scientific processes of acquiring seismic data on land on the sea floor will be discussed. Students will discuss underwater archeology and test the best method for retrieving artifacts from the seafloor. Aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, students get a chance to take part in scientific sampling and exploration. Their experience culminates in a research cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer where students will survey the sea floor using scientific equipment including a gravity core, driving an ROV and assisting in deploying a side scan sonar. Students study the dynamic, sediment cores, and how nutrients are found on the seafloor through hydrothermal vents.
