Aboard the R/V Sea Explorer, students get a chance to take part in scientific sampling and exploration. Their experience culminates in a research cruise aboard the R/V Sea Explorer where students will survey the sea floor using scientific equipment including a gravity core, driving an ROV and assisting in deploying a side scan sonar. Students study the dynamic, sediment cores, and how nutrients are found on the seafloor through hydrothermal vents. The seafloor is a good place to study the history of the planet because it undergoes fewer disturbances than land. Students will investigate and examine the composition of layers in a core sample by working as a team to unlock the mysteries of Earth's climatic and tectonic past.
