Our Coastal Citizen Science Investigations Overnight program connects unique activities that teach students about ocean health, how it is studied and by whom. It also highlights the tools and protocols that are used, and how to mobilize citizens to crowd-source data and contribute to a healthy coastal ecosystem. Students will serve as Citizen Scientists and complete several monitoring projects to gain an understanding of methods and protocols related to studying and monitoring the health of the ocean and its inhabitants. On the research vessel the R/V Sea Explorer and in lab the citizen science projects being monitored include; Coastkeeper's MPA Watch, Secchi Disk, USC Sea Grant's Urban Tides and HABWatch, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Plate Watch and EarthEcho's Water Challenge. In the evening, students will take action by creating their own citizen science project on an online app, which the public can access to input data! Students engage in real-world science and begin to understand their value and place in the scientific community.
