The Coastal Citizen Science Investigations Lab program connects unique activities that teach students about ocean health, how it is studied and by whom. It also highlights the tools and protocols that are used, and how to mobilize citizens to crowd-source data and contribute to a healthy coastal ecosystem. Students will serve as Citizen Scientists and complete several monitoring projects to gain an understanding of methods and protocols related to studying and monitoring the health of the ocean and its inhabitants. These monitoring projects include Coastkeeper's MPA Watch, USC Sea Grant's Urban Tides, Smithsonian Environmental Research Center's Plate Watch and EarthEcho's Water Challenge. Students engage in real-world science and begin to understand their value and place in the scientific community.
